Democrats were way off the mark regarding the overall national feelings and beliefs about immigration. Polls show that the majority of Americans support strong national borders and moderate immigration, not loose borders and uncontrolled mass immigration. Polls also show that the majority of Americans support some kind of pathway to citizenship or pathway to permanent residency for non-felon unauthorized immigrant workers that have been here for years, many of which were considered "essential workers" during the pandemic. Most of them are not leaving, no matter what Trump does.
Thus, Democrats have a clear path for developing a new strong and well-defined policy on immigration; supporting well-controlled borders, moderate immigration and a process for the legalization of non-felon unauthorized immigrant workers that have been benefitting the American economy for many years.
If the Democratic Party even hints now at supporting open and uncontrolled borders, it will be catastrophic and will continue to increase the possibilities of the election of populist, right-wing candidates leading us down the path to authoritarianism or even fascism. Progressives, please get it through your heads that your support of quasi-open borders and the decriminalization of all unauthorized entries into the USA, is a small minority opinion and will only contribute to the election of MAGA Republicans.
It's also immoral to have Biden-style policies that send the message: "Please don't come, but if you come you can almost certainly stay and have a good life in America." This resulted in many deaths of people making the long dangerous journey to the USA. The only good policy is one that makes it absolutely clear that you simply can't enter the country illegally without negative consequences. This can be promoted by establishing a universal, mandatory, well-enforced E-Verify requirement for all workers in the USA, with the workers already here being grandfathered in.
Uncontrolled mass immigration will lead to extreme stress on American resources and will exaggerate already existing problems such as our housing shortage, resulting in ever increasing home and apartment prices with even more people becoming unhoused. Mass immigration contributes to urban sprawl over our valuable rural landscapes, more pollution, increasing water shortages, loss of wildlife habitat, and increased carbon generation.
And you can see by our government's own population projections, by having uncontrolled multiple millions of immigrants coming in, our population would rapidly increase to over 1 billion well before the year 2100, within the lives of today's kids. Certainly, we don't want our country to be extremely over-populated like India and China.
Now is the time for the Democratic party to unite around a well-defined immigration policy that the vast majority of Americans can support.
